Instagram has recently made a welcome change when it comes to its direct messages. Until now, when you wanted to share a funny post with your friend, you would just @ mention that friend in the comment area. This has worked well until now, and you might have noticed many such comments on Instagram with nothing but just @username mention.

The good news is that now there’s an easier way to do this by just tapping on the arrow next to the like and comment icons in every post. You just need to tap on the arrow to send the photo and video to any friend or group as a direct message.

This means that now it is quite possible that you will start receiving new Instagram direct messages from friends. Another piece of good news is that there is an easy way to mute notifications from conversations so that you won’t be disturbed by them.

How to mute Instagram Direct Message notifications

The process to do mute Instagram direct message notifications is really easy and just takes a few taps.

  • Launch the Instagram app and then tap on the Direct icon from the top-right corner.
  • Select the conversation that you would like to mute.
  • Tap on the “I” icon from the top-right corner.
  • Now, just slide the mute notification to the ON position.

For now, there’s apparently no way to mute a conversation for a particular time period, unlike WhatsApp and some other apps that do allow this, but at least now  there’s a way to mute those annoying notifications. That said, if you ever want to start getting notifications again, then just go back to the DIrect interface and unmute notifications.
