A recent Supreme Court ruling delayed Obama’s Clean Air Act legislation that sought to reduce U.S. carbon emissions from fossil fuels by a third by 2022. The ruling addressed the immediate effect of the proposal, which would have sped up the decline of the coal industry in the United States. The Clean Air Act imposed strict limits on the greenhouse gases released by coal plants, in turn forcing cuts to overall coal production.
