Do you crave for a bigger hard drive in your newly bought PlayStation 4? Then the good thing is that you can easily replace your old 500GB hard drive with a new one, provided you don’t fear opening the PS4.

Both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are equipped with standard 2.5-inch 500GB hard drive running at 5,400 rpm. Just like the PlayStation 3, Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) (TYO:6758) allows users to upgrade their hard drives in the PS4 too. Fortunately, the company hasn’t made swapping hard drive more difficult for gamers. So let’s learn how to easily swap the hard drive of PS4 with a new one.

What you’ll need:

  • New 2.5-inch hard drive of your preferred storage size (but more than 500GB)
  • Philips-head screwdriver
  • 1GB USB flash drive (to install latest software update)

Now, coming to the not-so hard part. Place your PS4 on a flat surface, apply some pressure to the glossy part, and slide it down which should remove the cover. You’ll now be able to see the hard drive attached to the tray. Locate the correct screws and unscrew it.

Once you pull out the hard drive tray, remove the screws that hold the hard drive and then replace the old one with the new one. Remember to place the SATA ports facing towards the opening. Place the tray back in the PS4.

Installing the PS4’s software updates

Next step would be to download the latest software update from Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) (TYO:6758)’s website, formatting your USB flash drive with FAT32 and then placing the update file in a new folder. Turn the console on, boot it in Safe mode and then hit the “Initialize PS4” option. Detailed instructions on each of these steps is present in the video below. So go ahead, feast your eyes on this video, be a DIY’er and replace or upgrade your PS4 hard drive without hiring a technician!
