Capcom has been a player in the gaming market for decades and has been a partner of Nintendo’s for a long time. So now that the Nintendo Switch has been announced, people have been wondering how Capcom will support it. Fortunately, the game developer has now shared with the world some (but not all) of its intentions. It could produce multiplatform games for the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Set to go on sale at some point in March 2017, the Nintendo Switch has gathered some big game partners. These partners include Activision, Konami, Square Enix, Unity, Sega and more. As for Capcom, it’s researching whether it can port multiplatform games currently on the PS4 and Xbox One over to the Switch.

What’s holding it back?

While the research has been ongoing for some time, right now it has been unable to share specifics. However, it has pointed out that each console has different characteristics it must analyze before porting is possible.

These differences can be many, but the main ones of note are differences in console direction and play-style. While the differences are not so noticeable between the PS4 and Xbox One, the Nintendo Switch is a whole new kettle-of-fish, mainly due to the Nintendo console’s mobile/console hybrid nature.

On its own website, Capcom wrote: “At Capcom, we determine which platform to release a title for after considering the features of both our software and the hardware in question, believing we must bring the enjoyment of our games to their maximum potential.”

As for how the company feels about the Nintendo Switch and multiplatform games, it said: “It is excellent to have the market invigorated with new hardware launches,” the company said. “As a software publisher, we endeavor to develop games that offer enjoyment best suited to each piece of hardware’s features and target users. Following first-party, to introduce our content we are currently moving forward with internal planning and analysis as a partner company.”

Graphics capabilities

One of the more surprising comments to come out of this Capcom message isn’t the fact that it’s considering multiplatform games for the Switch. It’s that the company doesn’t yet know the full graphics capabilities of the console. Surely at some point very soon, Nintendo will share these details with partners, but one thing for is certain. If it doesn’t, it will lead to a delay in launch titles and lackluster early sales figures.

Nintendo briefing

While Nintendo is still holding information back from its partners, it’s doing the same to consumers. However, the Japanese tech giant is expected to have answers on January 12, 2017. This is when a briefing will be held, and Nintendo is expected to reveal the console’s prices, specifications and launch lineup. Whether Capcom will have had the time to work on porting over even one of its multiplatform games by then is anyone’s guess.
