Sony’s PlayStation 4 outsold Microsoft’s Xbox One in the US in the month of January, according to retail sales data obtained by NPD Group. Sony too said that the PS4 was the top-selling console worldwide in January, but the company didn’t reveal any actual number of sales made during the month.

PlayStation 4 doubled Xbox One sales in January

Video game journalist Geoff Keighley, who earlier spoke to PlayStation SVP Guy Longworth reported that Sony sold twice as many PlayStation 4 consoles as its nearest next gen competition, which we assume that he is talking about the Xbox One. In a tweet he said “PS4 was #1 in sales for next gen consoles in January, nearly doubling the nearest next gen competitor.”

Microsoft hasn’t revealed its sales number for the month of January. In December, Xbox One took the lead by selling 908,000 consoles in the US, beating the PS4. Apart from that, the Redmond based company also sold 643,000 Xbox 360s during the month. But given that the PS4 has suffered from supply issues in December, while Xbox One was available easily, the sales number doesn’t exactly reveal gamers’ preferences.

What’s next for PS4 and Xbox One?

The month of January is very important from the view of comparison, because it is the first non-holiday month where both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One were on sale for the same amount of time. However, it’s worth noting that the PS4 costs $100 less than the Xbox One, and logically price sensitive gamers would opt for the PS4 instead.

The next week is going to be an exciting week, as the PlayStation 4 is going to be released in Sony’s home market of Japan, and the exclusive Electronic Arts (EA) Titanfall game will be coming to Xbox One on March 25th. Let’s see what the coming months has in store for Sony and Microsoft.
