Today a bipartisan group of representatives introduced the Prohibiting Threatened and Endangered Creature Trophies Act of 2019 (the ProTECT Act) which will help prevent the hunting of any species listed as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act. It would prohibit trophy hunting of these animals at canned hunting facilities in the U.S. AND ban the import of trophies of ESA-listed species, including lions, elephants, leopards and rhinos.

Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States: “Trophy hunting is a pay-to-slay scheme to satisfy elite one-percenters’ desire to kill endangered and threatened species for bragging rights or for fun. It is high time that the United States rids itself of the appalling reputation as the world’s biggest importer of hunting trophies. This legislation will accomplish just that.”

Legislation that prevents people from importing slaughtered animals to display in their living rooms is a critical first step,” said. “The American public has shown time and again that they oppose trophy hunting of these iconic species.
