Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) has become more inclined to adding new shows and original programs to its portfolio, and in the coming years, we will be able to see more and more. In the next five years, Netflix plans to add a completely new and original show or a new series of an already-existing popular show every two-and-a-half weeks.
More original content from Netflix
This information came from Netflix Chief Content Officer of Ted Sarandos when he spoke at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York on Monday. The number of original shows on Netflix is comparatively few for now, so the video streaming service will need to add more shows to hit a solid cadence. Sarandos said the company hopes to reach the mark of 20 original shows, which at present number nine (House of Cards and the forthcoming show Marco Polo’ are two such shows).
Netflix “will eventually be the largest producer of original content in the world,” Sarandos said.
Netflix is already working on more original content. In addition, the company has plans to create an original movie as well, which will be a sequel to Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, as announced by it in September.
More audience-specific shows
The new original shows from Netflix are meant to cater to a specific set of audiences and not to the maximum number possible of the 50.7 million subscriber base. The two original series House of Cards and Orange is the New Black have generated interest among the maximum possible subscribers, but with the new shows, Netflix plans to address specific audiences. Sarandos said one such series was Lillyhammer, which catered to about 65% of the audience in Norway and was the first original series from Netflix.
While Netflix’s catalog of original series is already growing, it also includes some shows that are lesser known. Peaky Blinders is one such show set in the 20th century, and it narrates the story of a gang involved in the fixing of horse races in England. Another show is BoJack Horsemen, a cartoon about a washed-up 90s sitcom star who is an anthropomorphic horse at the same time.
