Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) announced “Netflix ISP Speed Index” on Monday, which assigns ranks to the internet service providers on the quality of their online viewing experience. Previously Netflix gathered similar data and released some of that data on its blog.
Through this Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) wants customers to push ISPs to join its content delivery system, Open Connect, which allows subscribers to stream 3-D content and high definition video. But ISPs also require Netflix; it is a reason that many consumers buy their services in the first place
Broadband providers like Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Fiber, Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE:CVC) and Suddenlink, have signed on, but there are other providers who are not ready for the same. The high definition streaming competes with the cable operator’s own video offering, and also Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) has earned the reputation of dominating bandwidth. Around 33 percent of traffic during the peak hours are contributed by Netflix according to Sandvine, which raises the concern that ISPs will push back usage based pricing.
The site let the hassle free comparison of ISPs in the country along with the International comparisons. During the launch, the Netflix ISP Speed Index includes data for the U.S., Mexico, Ireland, U.K., Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
A few data points from the new Netflix ISP Speed Index, reflecting data for February:
- At 3.35Mbps, Google Fiber in the U.S. provides the highest average Netflix streaming bitrate
- Sweden’s Ownit is the second after Google delivering the highest average Netflix bitrates at 2.99 Mbps.
- Netflix members in Finland receive, on average, the highest bitrates while those in Mexico have the slowest connection on an average.
- Scandinavia proves its standing as a great broadband region, all ISPs in Denmark, Sweden and Finland delivered averages above 2Mbps.
In the United States, Google Fiber is the number 1 with 3.35Mbps; Clearwire Corporation (NASDAQ:CLWR) is in the last spot at 1.25 Mbps. The average speed is 2.3Mbps. In UK Virgin is the topmost amongst the competition with 2.37 Mbps and EverythingEverywhere is the last with 1.77 Mbps. The average speed is 2.07Mbps.
The ISP Speed Index of Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) is based on data from more than 33 million Netflix members who on an average view over 1 billion hours of TV shows and movies streaming from Netflix per month. The speeds, which are listed, show the average performance of all Netflix stream on each ISP’s network, which is a reflector of the performance enjoyed by users on an ISP network.
