The study by online bank Tangerine.ca analyzed data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics to see which jobs in what state had the most significant difference in employment compared to the US national average using each occupation’s ‘location quotient’ score. This top ten ranks the ten most disproportionately common jobs nationwide.
Mining Roof Bolters in West Virginia is overall the most disproportionately common role of any state. For every 100,000 people in the state, this job employs roughly 115 people, around 87 times higher than the national average for Roof Bolters across the US. West Virginia is known to have historically been full of rich coal reserves.
In Hawaii, Motorboat Operators are the most disproportionately common job in the state. Nationwide, roughly two in 100,000 employed people are in the role on average, but in Hawaii, this number is around 63 per 100,000, more than 32 times the national average.

Hawaii | Motorboat Operators | 32.29 | 62.8 | 1.9 |
Oregon | Logging Workers, All Other | 28.99 | 63.5 | 2.2 |
North Dakota | Wellhead Pumpers | 26.64 | 303.2 | 11.4 |
Nevada | Continuous Mining Machine Operators | 26.22 | 274.4 | 10.5 |
Virginia | Marine Engineers and Naval Architects | 25.78 | 45.2 | 5.2 |
South Dakota | Forest and Conservation Workers | 23.77 | 106.3 | 4.5 |
Louisiana | Entertainers and Performers | 23.5 | 138.5 | 5.9 |
Alaska | Mining and Geological Engineers, Including Mining Safety Engineers | 22.73 | 118.9 | 5.2 |

The number of Logging Workers employed per 100,000 in Oregon make it the most disproportionately common job in the state. Roughly two in 100,000 are employed in the role nationwide, but this number sits at around 63 in 100,000 in Oregon, 29 times the national average.
In Louisiana, Entertainers and Performers have the most disproportionately common job in the state. Roughly 138 of 100,000 employed are in the role in the state, 23 times the national average.
Marine Engineers and Naval Architects have the most disproportionately common occupation in Virginia. Around 45 per 100,000 employed work in the role in the state, which is more than 25 times the national average.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson from Tangerine.ca said: “It is fascinating to see what job roles prosper in each state, but it’s also a good method of highlighting some of the leading industries in each region. Roles like Entertainers and Performers, Shampooers, and even Motorboat Operators being some of the most disproportionately common across the 50 states is an interesting contrast to the large variety of roles in energy and gas in the list.”
