Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is in a period of mass transition. The change is not in opposition to current CEO Steve Ballmer, and it is not the work of a new management team. The whole organization is shifting its focus as the tech world changes.

A new CEO will not majorly alter the company’s direction. A new report supports this thesis and suggests that the company may not be looking to install a full CEO at all. According to the rumor, which All Things D picked up from sources inside Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), Ford CEO Alan Mulally will function as a caretaker until someone from the next generation is ready to take control of the company.

Microsoft is not looking for a CEO

According to the report, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is looking for a temporary leader with management and people-leading skills in order to get the company through its current transition. Mulally is known for his charisma and leadership skills. His inability to understand the intricacies of the tech world has been holding him back in the eyes of some analysts.

The role that today’s reports suggest is being prepared for him could work, even with his limited experience with technology. In the proposed management structure, Mulally would take the role of CEO while one of the company’s up-and-coming executives would be groomed for the role down the road.

Mulally could be a good choice for Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) at the moment. His ability to lead and manage a company, demonstrated by his success at Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F), is clear. Those skills may be more useful to Microsoft than the technical insights and inexperience of the company’s up-and-coming executives.

Microsoft is still searching for a leader

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) would replace Mulally in the medium term with an internal candidate, according to the rumored plan. There are several major candidates that have been linked to the top job at the Redmond firm in recent months. Four in particular were named by All Things D: enterprise head Satya Nadella, former Nokia chief Steven Elop, COO Kevin Turner and strategy guru Tony Bates.

Satya Nadella is the top pick right now as the company concentrates on enterprise offerings in order to drive shareholder value. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has its work cut out for it over the coming months. A new CEO is needed and investors are getting impatient.
