It appears as if we aren’t the only species with a hankering for a good cup of tea. A video has recently surfaced of a lizard drinking tea from a cup, and it’s pretty fascinating – and cute, to boot!
The video, included below, is a little over a minute long of a lizard enjoying a nice glass of tea. The majority of animals prefer water, so it’s interesting to see an animal taking a sip of someone else’s drink. I guess if you have reptiles around, you’ll have to avoid leaving your cup out if you don’t want your lizard drinking tea.
Humorously, this seems to be a real life example of the infamous “tea lizard” meme. For quite some time, a viral internet image has been circulating around the web of Kermit the Frog sipping a cup of tea – often with a funny statement attached. An on-air reporter for ABC News’ Good Morning America referred to the picture as a “tea lizard,” despite the fact that Kermit is a frog puppet, and the hashtag has since caught on as many people online started poking fun at the unfortunate misstep.
The mistake is especially odd, considering that Kermit the Frog himself has made an appearance on the same show. Disney also owns the Muppet as well as ABC, so it’s interesting that the meme was so blatantly mislabeled despite the incredibly recognizable character. The Internet found the whole situation quite amusing, even going so far as to jokingly suggest that it was an example of “cultural appropriation” and an “insult to herpetology.”
While the Kermit meme is definitely not an example of a lizard drinking tea, it appears as if the host of Good Morning America may have been right about the reptile’s proclivity for a good glass of tea.
