LG recently announced plans to roll out security updates for Android users every month. It is the third company to make a commitment to protect Android users from vulnerabilities related to the Stagefright Bug,  a security flaw that makes it easy for hackers to hijack the system with a single text message. Google and Samsung previously announced plans to implement regular updates.

LG confirms plans to roll out regular updates every month

Wired confirmed LG’s announcement after receiving an email from the phone maker’s representative. The email explained, “LG will be providing security updates on a monthly basis which carriers will then be able to make available to customers immediately. We believe these important steps will demonstrate to LG customers that security is our highest priority.”

Samsung previously announced their similar plan in a blog post earlier this week and Google started rolling out updates for Nexus devices on Wednesday. The latter’s update will cover Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and Nexus Player. Samsung’s update will include process that fast tracks security patches over the air  Other phone makers including Sony, HTC, and Android One also plan to send out patches for Stagefright.

LG and other Android device makers take the initiative to protect users

The Stagefright Bug is complicated to fix because there are many different versions of Android out there. Each phone maker and carrier tweaks the Android operating system at their discretion, and makes it difficult to distribute security patches. Daniel Cooper for Engadget added, “That’s why the Stagefright bug is so terrifying, since it threatens anything up to 950 million devices with little chance of a one-size-fits-all solution being created. We’ve reached out to LG so that we can confirm that it will commit to monthly security updates, but have not had a reply by the time of publication.”

LG’s system updates will bring relief to LG phone owners.
