Businesses announced more than 75,000 job cuts in January, an increase of 218% from the same month last year. Energy and retail employers led the increase, reporting plans to cut more than 40,000 jobs between the two sectors. Disappointing earnings have led a number of notable companies, namely Yahoo, to lay off large portions of their workforces.
