A few months ago, reports suggested that Apple would double the base storage of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus from 16GB to 32GB. A new report coming out of Asia claims that the Cupertino company will also double the highest storage option from 128GB to 256GB. This is not the first time the rumors of a 256GB iPhone 7 have emerged, though. In June, Taiwanese research firm TrendForce claimed that the new iPhone 7 would be available in 32GB, 128GB and 256GB variants.

256GB iPhone 7 pushes the NAND prices higher

The latest report comes from DigiTimes. Citing industry sources, the publication said at least one model of the iPhone 7 will get 256GB internal storage. DigiTimes pointed out that the NAND flash storage prices have been skyrocketing due to rising demand for new smartphones – mainly the “iPhone 7 featuring up to 256GB storage.” Leading flash storage providers such as Samsung and SK Hynix have been increasing prices, and the trend is expected to continue until the fourth quarter of 2016.

Some other reports have claimed that only the 5.5-inch model will feature the 256GB storage option. If the new report is true, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will give users enough space to store high-quality photos, music, videos and other stuff. Apple fans have long complained that 16GB was too little – preventing them from getting the latest iOS updates due to storage limitations.

Just three weeks away

It’s an interesting move by Apple considering the tech giant has been encouraging iPhone owners to use its subscription-based iCloud. Separately, Japanese publication MacOtakara reports that Apple will launch only the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus – there will be no Pro version. Previously, there were speculations that Apple could introduce a third variant called iPhone 7 Pro with a dual-camera setup and Smart Connector. But the company has ditched the Pro version and incorporated these high-end features in the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus.

Apple is said to hold a special event on September 7 to announce the new iPhones. The devices would go on sale on September 23. The upcoming iPhones would look a lot like the last year’s iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, except for the redesigned antenna lines and the removal of the headphone jack.
