UPDATE: Cloudflare reached out to ValueWalk and blames Verizon for the outage. However, we were unable to confirm where the fault lies with the earlier outage.

The week is off and running with a major internet outage affecting a multitude of services, including Google, Amazon, Reddit, Discord, Cloudflare and many others. Given that Cloudflare serves so many major websites, it seems possible that the widespread internet outage may stem from there.
A message on Discord early this morning described the problem as a “general internet outage,” which doesn’t sound possible. However, if Cloudflare was the source of much of the problem, it may seem like a general internet outage. After all, Cloudflare touts itself as “make[ing] the Internet work the way it should,” and that description is quite apt.
Reports from Down Detector suggest the issue started around 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. Eastern, although It looks like some of the issues are starting to clear themselves up. Earlier on its status dashboard, Cloudflare said it “identified a possible route leak impacting some Cloudflare IP ranges.” The service also said the leak affected many internet services, which is why it seemed like a sort of general internet outage.
At the time of this writing, some parts of the world appear to be still affected by the outage. Some users of Discord, which requires Cloudflare to operate, are saying that the service is back up for them, but a few others are commenting and saying that it still isn’t working. Down Detector shows a spike in outage reports for Amazon, Google, Reddit and more early this morning, but the number of reports for each service appears to be dropping off.
Google and Reddit never even acknowledged there was a problem on their status dashboards. If Cloudflare really was to blame for the widespread internet outage, then that could be why many services never registered or admitted to problems on their end. However, the uproar on Twitter was quite deafening, so to speak, so it’s clear that there was a widespread problem. Hopefully the issue will die down now and everyone can get on with business as usual.
