Samsung’s latest flagship phablet Galaxy Note 7 is on track to be one of the most successful smartphones of 2016. Now the rumor mill and consumers are eagerly looking forward to the next year’s Galaxy S8, which is expected to focus heavily on virtual reality. Recent rumors suggest that the Galaxy S8 would be powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 8895 processor that is currently under testing.

Exynos 8895 to be 30% faster than its predecessor

According to MobiPicker, the Exynos 8895 will have a clock speed of 4GHz compared to 3.6GHz of Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 and 2.7GHz of Apple’s A10 chipset. A Weibo user going by the name IceUniverse said the Exynos 8895 uses the 10nm manufacturing process. The current Exynos 8890 that powers both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note 7 is based on the 14nm process.

The switch to 10nm manufacturing process would help the Korean electronics giant pack more transistors into one chip, improving the power efficiency and performance. According to MobiPicker, the Exynos 8895 will be 30% faster than the peak speed for its predecessor Exynos 8890. The Galaxy S8 is also rumored to feature a 5.5-inch 4K UDH display, 6GB RAM, and Android 7.0 Nougat.

Galaxy S8 to support Google’s Daydream

The Galaxy S8 – code named Project Dream – is said to be compatible with Google’s Daydream virtual reality platform. The 4K display would help enhance user experience, especially when playing VR content. A Samsung executive recently indicated that the company may ditch the flat screen and make the S8 available only with a dual-edge display, similar to the Galaxy Note 7. Samsung plans to add more user-friendly functions on the curved display.

Note that Samsung has not revealed anything about the Galaxy S8, so these rumors should be taken with a pinch of salt. The Korean company traditionally refreshes the Galaxy S line at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) every year. We can expect the Galaxy S8 to be unveiled at the next MWC event that is scheduled to take place in Barcelona between February 27 and March 2, 2017.
