The Galaxy Note 5 is expected to be released later this year, but apparently the production plans for the phablet aren’t set in stone just yet. Qualcomm is attempting to convince Samsung that its chips can handle the processing power for the Galaxy Note 5, even though it’s believed the company lost orders for the Galaxy S6 because of overheating problems.
Qualcomm said to lose Galaxy S6 orders
DigiTimes is reporting that Qualcomm is in the running for chip orders from the Galaxy Note 5. The company supposedly fixed the overheating problems that were said to have caused Samsung to use its own Exynos chips for the Galaxy S6.
The website’s sources said that there are not two different versions of the Galaxy S6 running on two different chips like there were the Galaxy S4. It had been previously reported in other sources that Samsung was releasing some Galaxy S6 smartphones running on its Exynos chips and some running on Qualcomm’s chips. Samsung was reportedly manufacturing its Exynos chips using a 14 nanometer process.
Will Qualcomm receive Galaxy Note 5 orders?
TSMC had reportedly won the contract to manufacture the Snapdragon 810 processors designed by Qualcomm using a 20 nanometer process. It was the Snapdragon 810 processor that was supposed to have been used in some of the Galaxy S6 handsets. However, as a result of the overheating issue, TSMC was said to have had its orders reduced because Qualcomm lost orders for the Galaxy S6.
In spite of the overheating problems, Qualcomm is trying desperately to win Samsung back as a customer. The Galaxy Note 5 is expected to be released in the second half of this year. If Qualcomm does prove to Samsung that it has fixed the problems with its chips, then it would probably be good news not only for Qualcomm itself but also for TSMC, which could reportedly win orders to manufacture the chips for the Galaxy Note 5.
A lot is hanging on these next couple of months as Samsung looks to finalize its supply chain for the Galaxy Note 5 ahead of the expected release in the second half of the year.
