Snapchat, the popular photo messaging app, is having a rough time these days. Previously, Snapchat sustained a massive hack in which more than 4.5 million usernames and phone numbers were revealed. The company later apologized and took some steps, but the damage was already done.

After the hack, many users complain that they’re seeing an increase in spam messages, but according to Snapchat, this issue is not related to the security breach. Now you can either delete your Snapchat account to experience peace of mind, or you can follow the method below to deal with spam messages on Snapchat.

Currently there’s no system in Snapchat to report spam, and you can only block once you get it. However, there’s a simple way to block spam messages received from strangers.

How to stop spam messages on Snapchat

Go to the Settings section of the app and change “Who Can Send Me Snaps” from “Everyone” to “My Friends.” The consequence of this is that you won’t get any spam messages from people who aren’t in your friends list.

Initially after the hack, Snapchat published a blog post without apologizing, but more than a week after it, the company came to its senses and finally said, “Sorry for any problems this issue may have caused you.”

For those who want to opt out of the “Find Friends” option, click on “Mobile Number” and then uncheck “Link username to mobile number.”

It never hurts to follow some preventive steps, rather then get spam messages and have to delete them.
