Stories abound of stupid acts of thievery, but these two iPad thieves might just take the biscuit.
Dillian Thompson, 20, and Dorian Walker-Gaines, 22 are part of the so-called “money team.” The only problem is they don’t seem to know how to look after their loot.
Ensnared by the iCloud
Not only did the pair upload a number of selfies, they also filmed a triumphant video from Burger King, showing off the money they stole,along with the iPad, laptop and a few other items they took from an unlocked car.
They later uploaded the video to Facebook, in which Dillian addresses his friends list. “This, my good people, is what we get from a good night’s hustle,” he claims, painfully aware that he has just incriminated himself for the world to see.
The selfies were recovered from the iCloud by a friend of the victim, who then posted them to reddit, where a high school classmate of Dorian recognized him. The eagle eyed reddit user then sent over the names and birth dates of the two criminals, as well as the video which our IQ-challenged felon posted to his Facebook timeline on January 8th.
iPad thieves: Lesson learned?
Most criminals know that you have to reset an iOS device after stealing it, but the memo obviously never reached this pair.
Houston police arrested the two amateurish thieves last night. According to the criminal note Dorian has already confessed to stealing the iPad and various other items. He is being held on a $10,000 bond while accomplice Dillian has a $5,000 bond.
The selfie craze has become so widespread that criminals can’t resist incriminating themselves with their newly stolen booty. The growing furor over internet privacy doesn’t seem to affect people who willingly publish incriminating videos online using stolen property, and I’m sure this stunning case of stupidity will not be the last time criminals get themselves in trouble using social media.
