Activists showed a greater appetite for joining boards in the sector in the U.S. during the first half of 2018, although in Canada the number fell slightly from 2017’s year-to-July peak. SandRidge Energy, which lost a proxy fight to Carl Icahn, was a notable contributor.

That may be in part because a greater number of activist campaigns in Canadian basic materials companies are coming from non-Canadian activists. Non-Australian activists meanwhile have yet to show a dramatic increase in interest in Australian basic materials stocks.
