Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s highly anticipated iWatch was confirmed to feature near-field communication (NFC) technology. This handy feature will enable the iWatch to transfer information and process payments with any other NFC device.
The Cupertino-based tech giant is expected to introduce the iPhone 6, iWatch, and the NFC feature on Tuesday during a press event. This latest report shows Apple is ready to replace plastic credit and debit cards that most people use. Even if this report of an iWatch with NFC turns out to be true, it is highly unlikely to hit stores until 2015.
The iWatch could come in two size options
The iWatch is also expected to come in two size options including a 1.3 inch and 1.5 inch styles. This prediction comes from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. He made a similar prediction earlier this year but this report offers a little more.
Smartwatches are the latest gadget of the moment. Many tech companies are clamoring to join the market, notable companies to release such gadgets include Samsung, LG, Sony, and Motorola.
The future of smartwatches
The smartwatch market has yet to catch on with mainstream consumers, but some think Apple could change that. Kuo also believes the iWatch case could be made from two to four different types of material. There is also a particular option which would involve a watch painted with gold to coordinate with the iPhone 5S. The watch could also offer health and fitness related features like a rear sensor which could monitor heart rate.
Unfortunately, there is much speculation the iWatch won’t be a huge hit with consumers like the iPhone was. Morgan Stanley’s cumulative shipments for Apple devices and it predicts iWatch shipments will remain far below the iPhone and iPad. Whether the iWatch goes the distance or not remains to be seen.
