Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is one of the few most forward-thinking tech companies on the market today. A  patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office was published today and it’s called “Electronic device with wrap-around display” and it shows what appears to be a smartphone with a more flexible design with a wrap-around display.

This unique display would “uncoil” to reveal more space for app icons, videos, photos, and more. The device would use touch gestures to lock or unlock the device instead of pressing down the “hold” button. The entire body of the phone also features a transparent glass design.

The purported design brings up one important question regarding the design of the device. Since it’s a wrap-around phone, how exactly would the phone pinpoint the location of the user?  This particular device would use facial recognition technology and cameras to decipher the location.

The purported iPhone may also feature a three-dimensional design with not one, but two flexible displays that are right on top of each other. Although the exact same content would be featured on both displays, one of those displays would be a little more out of phase than the other to create the illusion of depth perception.

The concept is nothing new as this particular patent was initially filed in 2011. Just last year, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) filed yet another very similar patent titled “Electronic Devices With Flexible Displays.”

And Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) isn’t the only tech company that has flexible displays on their mind. Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V), LG, and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) have all created similar displays. The latter reportedly has plans to move flexible screens to mass production in preparation for future cell phones.

If flexible technology and displays are in the future, then it’s a pretty good indicator that both Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Samsung will continue to make strides for technology.
