The Apple iPad is quickly replacing traditional PCs in local K12 schools. According to a recent report from Charlie Wolf (Needleham & Company) to investors, shipments for computers are down. The numbers fell by 265,000 units this past June compared to a year ago. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPad sale numbers doubled from sales of last year.

Wolf further explained, “Clearly, a significant portion of iPad sales represented an expansion of the market.”

He also stated that he thinks iPad will continue to replace personal computers in company headquarters and institutions. This sentiment is nothing new, as we’ve heard of government agencies replacing computers with the Apple tablet.

How do the iPad sales affect the sales of Apple’s Mac desktops and laptops? The good news is that overall sales in the United States experienced a 56.6 growth from last year. There was also an 8.8 percent decline in PC sales. However, it was also reported that although iPad sales grew 17 million, a record in quarterly sales, while Mac sales only grew by 2 percent. It’s evident that people are choosing the iPad over Mac, something that could end up hurting the entire company in the long run, especially if people end up losing interest in the tablet computer trend.

The iPad by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is one of the hottest items on the market right now, and it is for good reason. It’s a revolutionary gadget that makes technology fun again. It’s a cool tool that revitalizes learning, business, and life.  Although it’s currently replacing laptops and traditional PCs, I just don’t see how it will become the next computer. For one thing, many people can’t afford the iPad, and the though the affordable alternatives like Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire certainly fill that void, I just don’t see how one trendy gadget will single-handedly replace laptops.
