Amazon is taking another stride in dominating the entertainment and television streaming market. The e-tail giant just introduced the Fire TV stick, a handy little device that stream movies and TV shows, much like Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s Chromecast. Fire TV stick will retail for just $39.

Amazon’s new Fire Stick

The new Fire Stick will offer access to Amazon Prime, Amazon Music, Netflix, Spotify, and games. It is still unknown if whether the Fire TV gamepad will be compatible with the smaller streaming device, but that may be unlikely.

Jeff Bezos, chief executive officer for Amazon, elaborated, “Fire TV Stick is the most powerful streaming media stick available—a dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, dual-band and dual-antenna Wi-Fi, included remote control, voice search with our free mobile app, easy set-up, an open ecosystem, and exclusive features like ASAP for instant streaming. The team has packed an unbelievable amount of power and selection into an incredible price point—Fire TV Stick is just $39.”

Amazon Fire Stick competes directly with Chromecast

Fire Stick has roughly four times the storage and two times the memory of Chromecast. This device also features 1 gigabyte of built-in memory and a dual-core processor. The device is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Shoppers with Amazon Prime will receive a $20 discount for the next 48 hours, this cuts the device’s price to $19.

Amazon officially unveiled the original Fire TV earlier this year as a television streaming device to rival Roku and Apple TV. As many consumers continue to ditch cable and satellite television for cheaper online entertainment streaming services from Netflix and Hulu, the competition for streaming boxes will grow. There are plenty of quality devices on the market and Amazon’s devices are certainly in the lead. Now that Amazon has launched a smaller and budget friendly streaming device, it should bring the e-tailer in the forefront.
