Rumors about the Nexus 6 (or Shamu or Nexus X or whatever it ends up being called) have been floating around for some time, but now one website claims to have solidified all the details. 9to5 Google reports that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s next smartphone will be a phablet with a huge 5.92-inch display.
More details on the Nexus 6
The website claims that the phablet’s body will be just a little larger than the huge screen and that it will essentially “be a scaled up 2nd generation Moto X with some minor tweaks to make the larger size easier to use.” 9to5 Google also discounted last month’s report that the Nexus 6 would have a 5.2-inch display with a resolution of 1440p, among other specs.
The website claims to know for sure that the Nexus 6 will have a QHD resolution of 2560 x 1440 with a pixel density of 498 pixels per inch. Of course any phone with such a behemoth of a display is going to need a huge battery, and this one is no different, as it is said to have a 3,200 mAh battery.
The rear-facing camera on the Nexus 6 is said to be 13 megapixels and be able to shoot 4K UHD video. It is also expected to have the same 2-megapixel front-facing camera that was on the second generation Moto X.
9to5 Google states that the Nexus 6 will run on a Snapdragon 905 processor and perhaps 3 gigabytes of RAM. On the topic of flash storage, the website says that it’s “directly familiar with at least one device of the 32 GB storage capacity, but other capacities will likely also be available at some point.”
One area where the phablet may be lacking is on the 64-bit Android L operating system. They’re unsure if the final Nexus 6 will be able to take advantage of that technology.
How the Nexus 6 will differ from the Moto X
Of course there will be some important differences between the Nexus 6 and the Moto X. While the Nexus 6 seems like an improved Moto X, 9to5 Google reports that the volume and lock buttons will be lower than they were on the Moto X. This would put them closer to the middle of the phablet’s side.
The rest of the main interfaces like the headphone jack, mic and SIM card slot are said to be in the same positions as they were on the Moto X, at least proportionally speaking. The Nexus 6 is also expected to have the same aluminum bezel. The phone also may lack some of the Moto features, including Quick Capture and Moto Assist.
More than one Nexus 6?
The website reports that it’s also possible there will be more than one Nexus 6 or Nexus X made by Motorola. The writer does refer back to rumors of a 5.2-inch screen, saying that this display size has “definitely appeared in benchmark applications.” Also it’s always possible that the phone that’s codenamed Shamu won’t even carry the Nexus name.
But whatever the final device ends up looking like or being called, it’s expected to launch in November and possibly be unveiled in late October.
