Google has launched the Chrome Remote Desktop app for Android platform, which means that you can now control your desktop machine directly from your Android smartphone or tablet.
The existing Chrome Remote Desktop app allows users to login to their computers from remote locations. It allows users to access the entire PC, and retrieve files from any location. Those wanting to try out the Android app also need to install the Chrome desktop app which is available for Windows and Mac platforms, but not Linux.
“If you haven’t used Chrome Remote Desktop in the past, you can get started by enabling your Windows or Mac machine for remote access through the Chrome Web Store app. Next, simply launch the Android app on your phone or tablet, tap on the computer’s name and start using your remote machine as if you were sitting right in front of it,” Google said in a blog post on Wednesday.

Those who want to get started will first need to install the Chrome Remote Desktop app from the Chrome Web Store and then launch the Android app on your device. The entire process is surprisingly very quick and easy.
As per the company’s support documents, desktop sessions are encrypted with Chrome’s SSL features. It’s also worth noting that Chrome was not affected by the recent OpenSSL HeartBleed bug.
This new Remote Desktop app by Google will now be competing with LogMeIn and TeamViewer, which are also free services, just like Google’s offering. Google at this stage hasn’t released the app for Apple’s iOS, but as per the company, it will arrive “later this year.”
