Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) has been busy in making a string of announcements at a conference in China, unveiling chips and media boxes among other products. However, one of the important one was Android KitKat 4.464 bit kernel announced by the company, in China, on Wednesday.
Intel partnering with Xiaomi
Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) said that, through the enhanced Android Kitkat 4.4 with a 64 bit Kernel, the company is making an effort to make things simpler for future developers. Intel stated, “With this release, the company ported, validated and tested the Android Open Source code on IA, taking on the work that developers typically would need to do on their own.” It added that the release would provide a favorable environment for the future generation devices.
The media box was from QVOD technology, and is powered by Intel’s Bay Trail processors. The media box will be launched towards the end of this year, but it is not the only product that Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) is working on. According to Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president at Intel, the company is in the process of developing another media set-top box in collaboration with Xiaomi. QVOD is powered by the currently available Intel chip, but that does not mean that the company is not working on other chips.
Skaugen revealed that the company is working on a SoC system on a chip. The chip, dubbed “Braswell,” is expected to be a follow-up to the Bay Trail processor. The latest chip would be smaller in size, but more powerful and advanced in terms of performance and efficiency than the Bay Trail line. Intel would target Chromebooks and low end desktops through its Braswell chips.
Separate plans for China
Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) also provided details about its SoFIA project. According to Hermann Eul, Intel’s general manager of Mobile and Communications Group, the SoFIA 3G is a dual chip SoC that will be unveiled by the end of this year. Intel would power tablets and smartphones with the SoFia. Additionally, Eul talked about Intel’s plans to gain more traction in China, which is fast becoming the largest PC market in the world. In order to capitalize on the opportunity the chip maker is making effort to gain more traction by working on a new LTE platform that supports S-CDMA and TD-LTE.
