PIA invite royal couple to Pakistan and it backfires.

Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have had to postpone their honeymoon due to royal engagements, but that hasn’t stopped companies around the world from trying to take advantage of the royal couple’s popularity. Pakistan International Airlines attempted to jump on the royal wedding bandwagon too, taking to Twitter to invite the royal couple to Pakistan. The tweet ultimately backfired with many tweeting and commenting to mock the invite.

PIA Invites Royal Couple

The airline evoked the memory of Princess Diana while issuing their invite to the royal couple. PIA tweeted:

“We watched the #RoyalWedding and remembered #PrincessDiana and her trip to the northern areas of Pakistan. And we thought how wonderful it would be for the newlyweds to visit our northern splendo(u)rs as well! So #PrinceHarry and #PrincessMeghan, we are ready, just let us know when! #PIA”

They also shared a photo from one of Princess Diana’s trips to Pakistan.

Unfortunately for PIA, the royal family generally only flies on chartered flights from British Airways. Pakistan is, however, the second largest member of the Commonwealth of Nations, so it isn’t out of the question that they will receive a royal visit in the future. Word hasn’t broken yet on where the royal couple will be going for their honeymoon, but Pakistan does not seem to be in the running.

PIA Invites Royal Couple Backfires

Although some in Pakistan appreciated the invite, the invitation from PIA instantly evoked vitriol on twitter with users mocking the invite and tweet. While many applauded the PIA invites royal couple” move, plenty found it absurd. One user wrote, “Yeah I think it’s safe to say they are not coming …hold your markhor.”

One reader commented, “The biggest adventure on tour to northern areas [sic] will be on board the PIA flight!!”

Another user, reminding everyone that Pakistan was once under British colonial dominion commented, “His Royal Highness” are we still slaves?”

“Please spare the Royals, they have already lost one Princess,” one user commented, showing contempt for the airline.

Plenty of others commented and tweeted defending the airline. One wrote, “I think its [sic] a nice gesture by PIA to invite the royal couple to enjoy the beauty of Pak. I don’t see any room for such censure and contempt.”

Other users pointed out that their contempt for the airline is due to the fact that the airline was just jumping on the royal wedding bandwagon as a marketing move and using the memory of the late Princess Diana to do so.

Princess Diana’s Trip to Pakistan

PIA shameless used the memory of Princess Diana to promote their airline, posting a picture of her in Pakistan and using the hashtag #PrincessDiana.

Princess Diana did visit Pakistan, but it wasn’t an official royal visit. The princess visited Pakistan twice while dating Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan. The official purpose of the trip was to visit the cancer hospital established by cricket star Imran Khan and to help him raise money for the hospital.

Rumors later circulated that the real purpose of her visit was to meet with Hasnat’s family in hopes of being able to marry him once her divorce with Charles was finalized. Some unconfirmed rumors even claimed that Princess Diana was considering moving to Pakistan with Hasnat in hopes of pursuing a more normal life.
