Samsung may be planning to completely ditch the flat-screen model from its upcoming Galaxy S8 in favor of a dual-edge display. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7 were both accompanied by Edge variants that caught the eye of consumers, thanks to their stunning design. It emboldened Samsung to launch the dual-curved display version of Galaxy Note 7 without a standard model last week.

Samsung to use user-friendly functions to the edge display

In an interview with the Korea Herald, Samsung’s mobile chief Dong-jin Koh dropped hints that there would be only dual-edge display Galaxy S8. Earlier this year, the Korean company had to try hard to catch up with the ridiculously high demand for the Galaxy S7 Edge due to the edge display production issues. Now that Samsung has increased production to satisfactory levels, it is focusing more on devices with the curved displays.

Koh told the Korea Herald that Samsung would make “the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup.” However, he added that the company would do so only if it can provide users a differentiates experience through software and user-friendly functions for the curved display. The Galaxy S6 Edge and S7 Edge featured edge screens mostly for aesthetics.

Dual-edge Galaxy S8 to depend on the success of Galaxy Note 7

The recently launched Galaxy Note 7 could be a touchstone before Samsung goes ahead to launch a single Galaxy S8 model with the dual-edge display. A market researcher told the Korea Herald that Samsung will not get rid of the flat-screen Galaxy S model right away. But if the Galaxy Note 7 is received well by consumers, Samsung may consider focusing only on the Edge model.

The Galaxy S8 is rumored to sport a 4K UHD display for virtual reality. The device is internally code-named Project Dream, which points to Google’s Daydream VR standard. The S8 is also said to have the fifth generation Corning Gorilla Glass that entered production recently. The device is expected to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress early next year.
