Twitter has announced back in March that the company is shutting down TweetDeck AIR, TweetDeck for Android and TweetDeck for iPhone apps. At that time, the general estimate was in early May, but now it has come to light that the exact date of shutting down of these apps will be May 7.
Not surprisingly, Facebook integration is also going down on May 7. From Twitter’s action, it seems that the company wants the user to use the official Twitter app for Android and iPhone, compared to other third-party offerings. The official app provides a more consistent Twitter experience that resembles the Twitter website.
Twitter has said that TweetDeck for Mac and PC will still be around, and these apps will closely follow the feature updates that the Web and Chrome versions of the app will come with. According to TweetDeck “We think these web and Chrome apps provide the best TweetDeck experience yet.”
“Doubling down on the TweetDeck web experience and discontinuing our app support is a reflection of where our TweetDeck power-users are going.”
TweetDeck was acquired by Twitter in May 2011 in a deal worth $40M in cash and stock. TweetDeck at that time was the most popular Twitter client.
For now, TweetDeck application for Mac or PC aren’t retiring, but with TweetDeck focusing more on the web version, we don’t know how long these desktop apps will be with us. For now it only seems to make sense to look for alternatives if you’re using the iPhone, Android and AIR applications of TweetDeck.
