In one sentence, we’re going to have jailbreak lovers both cheering and booing. It appears as if an Italian developer has managed to jailbreak iOS 9.2.1, but he says he won’t release it publicly. Luca Todesco, the 18-year-old student who goes by the Twitter handle @qwertyoriop, tweeted his success in coming up with the jailbreak. To prove he was able to jailbreak the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, he also posted a photo of Cydia running on an iPhone 6.

Todesco also tweeted that he doesn’t release his work publicly until all the bugs have been worked out, but he didn’t say whether he will ever release his jailbreak. Currently iOS 9.2.1 is in beta, so clearly there are still bugs to be worked out of it. And of course just because he won’t release his, it doesn’t mean another developer won’t figure out how to exploit iOS 9.2.1 and issue a public release.
A track record with jailbreaks
According to Redmond Pie, the young developer did play a key role in jailbreaking an earlier version of iOS. The website reports that he provided input into the Pangu9 jailbreak, which was patched with the release of iOS 9.1. Further, he apparently worked on the jailbreak for iOS 8.4.1, although a Twitter user tweeted at him that he had promised one for that version of Apple’s operating system but didn’t deliver. Another Twitter user also said he had never released anything on his own, to which his response was “releasing is boring J i [sic] did technically release yalu however.”
We heard earlier this week that a jailbreak for iOS 9.2.1 was near as both TaiG and Pangu have apparently been working on one. It’s possible that Todesco will decide again to work with the Pangu team in the release, although we have no way of knowing for sure whether he will decide to do this, at least not anytime soon.
