As rumors continue to swirl about the iPhone 7, the latest murmuring regards the type of screen that Apple will use on its next generation smartphone.

A number of sources have mentioned the possibility of a thinner handset that does away with the 3.5mm headphone jack, a dual-camera system and the introduction of a halo model known as the iPhone 7 Pro. Now one website has predicted that the new smartphone could use the same screen as the iPad Pro.

Website praises Apple iPad Pro screen

According to the DisplayMate website the screen on the 9.7ins iPad Pro is a “truly impressive top performing display,” and represents a huge improvement over the unit seen on the iPad Air 2. Underlying improvements have been made to a screen that boasts the same 264 pixels per inch, same resolution and aspect ratio as the previous version.

The iPad Pro screen gained record results in tests including lowest screen reflection, peak brightness, contrasting rating and color variation. DisplayMate said that its color accuracy was “virtually indistinguishable from perfect.”

One of its best features is a “very innovative low reflectance screen that reflects just 1.7% of the ambient light by using a new anti-reflection AR coating. It has by far the lowest low screen reflectance of any mobile display, so its image colors and contrast in high ambient light will appear considerably better than any other mobile display.”

If Apple uses screen on iPhone 7 it would be better than Galaxy S7

The site makes an “educated guess” that the iPad Pro screen could also be seen on the new iPhone 7. It is thought that Apple could also add the new DCI-P3 wide color gamut, and an anti-reflect coating. True Tone could also be added, a feature that emits different amounts of white light based on external surroundings.

An upgrade to the screen would be welcome news for Apple fans. At the moment DisplayMate suggests that the Samsung Galaxy S7 has a better display than the iPhone 6s. The site says that the Samsung smartphone boasts the “best smartphone screen in town.”

The Galaxy S7 has an OLED display, while Apple only has an LCD unit. It is thought that Apple will make the switch in 2018, which is unfortunately after the release of the iPhone 7.

Apple versus Samsung battle will rumble on

However the iPad Pro screen beats any device, be it a phone or a tablet, in terms of reflected light glare.

“While its importance has been overlooked by most consumers, reviewers, and (even) manufacturers, it is a major enhancement that reduces the reflected light glare from the screen by a very impressive factor of 3 to 1 compared to most Tablets and Smartphones,” Soneira continued. “Reflected ambient light washes out the on-screen images, reducing both their contrast and color saturation, so on the iPad Pro 9.7, you’ll see better color and contrast in ambient light than any other mobile display.”

If Apple does use a smaller version of the iPad Pro screen on the iPhone 7, it could beat Samsung to the title of best smartphone screen even before the switch to OLED displays. This would be a major coup for the company and a blow in the battle for supremacy in the high-end smartphone market.

However it is important to realize that these rumors are exactly that, just rumors. Apple has not made any official announcement on the iPhone 7 and no one has any idea if the smartphone will even be announced this September as widely predicted.
