LG Electronics Inc. (KRX:066570) (KRX:066575) is going to be the first company to launch an Android Wear-based smart watch. The Korean company said in a press release today that it will unveil the G Watch during the second quarter this year. Ending all speculations, Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has unveiled the Android Wear developer preview for app developers to create more apps for smartwatches. That will put the Mountain View-based company at the forefront of the nascent but promising wearable device market.

LG G Watch will also have health & fitness tracking features

Now Lenovo Group Limited (OTCMKTS:LNVGY) (HKG:0992)-owned Motorola also plans to release its own smartwatch ‘Moto 360’ later this year. The Korean electronics giant said that it’s working closely with Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) to develop the Android Wear-powered G Watch. The smart watch will be compatible with a number of Android smartphones. It will deliver relevant information when the user needs it or when they give a command by starting with “OK Google.”

LG Electronics Inc. (KRX:066570) (KRX:066575) said the G Watch will have health and fitness tracking features. It will enable users to follow their exercise goals, send text messages, call for a taxi, project movies on TV screens and make restaurant reservations. As seen in the above image, LG G Watch will feature an LCD touchscreen with rectangular profile. It bears the Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) icon on the top-right corner and shows time on the top-left. The Korean company said it will reveal more specifications at a later date.

LG not the only Google partner for Android Wear

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has also teamed up with many other companies besides LG Electronics Inc. (KRX:066570) (KRX:066575) to develop smart watches powered by its Android Wear. Other hardware partners include Fossil Group Inc (NASDAQ:FOSL), Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930), HTC Corp (TPE:2498) and Asus. By joining hands with multiple partners, the U.S. Internet company hopes to replicate the success of Android, which has become the world’s most popular mobile operating system.
