Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) said not long ago that it would be releasing a new version of its Galaxy Gear smart watch alongside the Galaxy S5. We’ve now seen the smart watch, so the technology community is widely expecting Samsung to unveil the Galaxy S5 today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

In the past, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) has held its own events to show off new devices, but this year, the company may be taking a much less expensive approach because sales were exceptionally weak in the most recently competed quarter.

Galaxy S5 expected to have fingerprint scanner

We’ve heard plenty of rumors about what the Galaxy S5 will feature, and today may very well be judgment day. Recently we heard confirmation from Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) itself that it was working on biometrics. More specifically, the company said it was trying to get an eye scanner ready for the handset, although management was unsure that it would be ready. However, it could have a fingerprint scanner instead, which would put Samsung’s flagship handset on par with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPhone 5S in this respect.

Other expectations for the Galaxy S5 include a 5.24-inch HD display, waterproofing and dustproofing. A 16-megapixel camera could be part of the package as well.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Gear 2

On Sunday, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) showed off the Galaxy Gear 2 smart watch. The company is trying to crawl back from the defeat which was the first version of the smart watch. It was launched late last year.

This time around, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) launched two versions of the Galaxy Gear 2—the Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo. The Neo version lacks a camera, although both will run on Samsung’s own Tizen operating system rather than Android. Samsung has also added a number of new features, like sports tracking and a heart rate monitor.

We’ve heard rumors in the past that Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) will launch two version of the Galaxy S5 this time around. The fact that there are two versions of the smart watch might suggest that there will indeed be two versions of the Galaxy S5, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
