Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) reached a new milestone this past weekend. Its original programming “House of Cards” became the first online TV series to win a major television award. Robin Wright won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Television Series award for her stupendous performance in Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX)’s political drama series.

Netflix earned multiple nominations

“House of Cards” was nominated for the Best Drama Series, along with two other categories. Corey Stoll was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film, and Kevin Spacey was nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Television Series. Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX)’s TV sitcom “Arrested Development” and dramedy series “Orange is the New Black” also won acting nominations. However,  none of those nominations translated into awards.

Netflix-tweet

Golden Globe ceremony host Amy Poehler and the winner of the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Television Series award commented humorously on Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX)’s multiple nominations. She said, “Enjoy it while it lasts, Netflix — you’re not going to feel so smug in a few years when Snapchat is up here accepting for Best Drama.”

Netflix may produce more original programming

In September 2013, Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) made history when David Fincher won the Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series at the Primetime Emmy awards. Fincher directed earlier episodes of the “House of Cards.” Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) forayed into original programming a couple of years ago, hoping that high quality shows would attract new subscribers. The success of “House of Cards” may prompt the company to produce more original programming in the future. The Los Gatos-based company surprised everyone when it released all episodes of the House of Cards’ first season at the same time.

HBO’s Behind the Candelabra won the award for the Best Movie or Miniseries. Legendary actor Michael Douglas was named the Best Actor in a Miniseries for his portrayal of Liberace.

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) shares inched up 0.11% to $332.50 in pre-market trading Monday.
